How to become a Personal Trainer

With health and fitness constantly on the minds of people today, personal training has become a growing industry. There are several advantaged to working as a personal trainer including autonomy, personal contact with clients, and turning a passion for fitness into an enjoyable occupation. Jobs can be found at a gym or fitness studio. But the road is not an easy or effortless one. There are steps that should be taken in order to legally work as a personal trainer. And before that, research and personal reflection should be done to find out if someone is appropriate for the job. The profession takes much more than barking orders at someone while they sweat on top of exercise equipment. It requires preparation and dedication in addition to a good knowledge of human physiology – not to mention a reasonable level of personal fitness.

The first step someone should take if they want to become a personal trainer is to consider their own personality to see if it makes a good fit. Personal training involves intimate one-on-one work with people and therefore requires a high degree of patience. Motivating people to stick with a tailored routine for fat loss may be easy at first, but getting people to stick with it is another matter. The job also involves teaching, guiding, and counselling – all elements that are not suited for everyone. A personal trainer has to be a good mediator able to balance what he or she thinks is appropriate with what clients are able to handle and ultimately wants for themselves.

There are basic requirements that every personal trainer should have such as a high school diploma and being of age. A CPR course is also necessary as personal trainers must be well versed in the field of first aid. After self reflection and meeting these basic prerequisites, a person should go to their local community centre or gym and speak to someone who is actually working as a personal trainer. Once there, you can learn about the multitude of jobs in the personal training field available in places you might not have previously considered such as hospitals or rehabilitation centres. Talking with someone who actually does this for a living will help to determine which direction you want to go, where you want to specialize, and what step to take next. And at the very least, you will have more information you can use to set up a home gym. Just be careful when buying workout machines so you can avoid the exercise equipment trap.

Once you’ve decided to move forward, you can look into getting your personal trainer certification. Be sure to find accreditation from a reputable organization. The ones that offer cheap certification are usually too good to be true. Look for a program with broad but detailed teaching areas that will give you the appropriate credentials. Better yet, take the academic route first and get your Bachelor’s degree as it will go a long way towards landing you a job in an increasingly competitive field. This wouldn’t be necessary if you just want to work at the gym, but a higher education can lead to other more involving opportunities in the future.

With all your schooling done and resume in place, you can begin looking for a job or embark on the challenging task of starting up your own business. Whatever the case, be prepared to keep up with developing trends and the newest information by networking, attending conferences, and enrolling in continuing education courses. Remember to look into getting liability insurance if it is not already provided by your workplace. You wouldn’t want all your hard work to get lost in a tangled mess of a back pain lawsuit. The last thing to keep in mind is always be conscious of time management. Leave enough time to keep yourself healthy so that you can do your job better. Personal training is a satisfying occupation that leads to an improved quality of life for others, but it takes effort and the first person that needs to be healthy is you.
