Show Your Kids How to Get Fit

It’s no secret that obesity rates are on the rise in every age category. Quite simply, parents are getting heavier than ever and that kids are following suit. There is obviously much more at play in the equation than a simple matter of overheating. Experts have long been trying to determine exactly why we have reached this perfect storm of obesity. It’s clear there are a variety of factors contributing to the problem and there is no one element to blame completely.

One thing to consider is that over eating has become much more convenient these days. If you want to snack on something all you have to do is go to the fridge to get some kind of unhealthy item, or there is probably some fatty high cholesterol snack in your cupboards as well. Parents have a natural inclination to provide for their children but sometimes it can backfire. The modern household has so many snack options that kids never have to experience what it feels like to be hungry, but they might forget what it’s like to eat healthy as well. When all you have to do is walk two steps to pick up a big bag of chips, it’s no wonder why kids are so heavy. Part of this blame goes squarely on the parents because they are the ones who have the money to buy these products. You have to show constraint in certain occasions because allowing your kids overindulge is the worst thing possible.

Another factor to consider is that parents are busier than ever which means they don’t have time to cook properly in their own kitchen. That means that restaurants are a popular destination in addition to ordering takeout food or having high cholesterol fast food. It’s a lot easier to take your kids to McDonald’s for a quick meal rather than cooking up a feast filled with healthy choices. Sometimes when you’re done with work you don’t have enough energy left over to commute back home and then cook up a storm. It’s a sign of modern times that is definitely impacting food choices and we see it manifests itself physically in more overweight people. This is just affecting kids either since parents are using the exact same thing.

It’s very important for you to never proper behavior rather than just telling what your kids to do. This goes for all aspects of parenting and not just trying to impart proper eating habits. Children are like sponges and they basically copy what their parents do from a very young age. That means if you model good behavior and educate your kids about healthy choices, then they will be more likely to stay on course with good eating habits. Remember that learning about food can be a family affair and it doesn’t have to be boring anyway. You can cook together and you can talk about food together, and that’s something that many modern families fail to do. In addition to passing along recipes it’s important to give your kids the information necessary to make smart choices in the future.

Remember that food is just one aspect of being healthy and exercise is the other. If you don’t live an active lifestyle then chances are your kids won’t either. This is another area where you should model behavior as best as you can, and of course you should have realistic expectations. No one is asking you to become a bodybuilder or to sign up for a marathon just so that your kids can benefit. But at the same time, being completely sedentary can have negative consequences for both you and your children as well. There’s nothing stopping you from making exercise a family affair and there are many things you can do together to benefit each and every member of the household. As you can see, the main point of this article is to turn fitness into something the entire family can explore together. You will impart such valuable lessons that will serve your children for a long time to come.
