Weight Busting Tips for the Christmas Holiday Season

The holidays are great fun and a wonderful chance to see family you don’t get to spend enough time with. Christmastime also feature some of the best food at any time of year. There are delectable treats and scrumptious delights that are featured on successive days of family eating. It’s such a wonderful combination of good times, great spirits, and special home cooking. Unfortunately, almost all of us indulge just a little bit too much. Even after a few short weeks of holiday eating, we find ourselves with expanding waistlines and increased weight. But it’s important to remember that you have full control over your own holiday eating. No one is going to force through down your mouth, and the decision to eat something will always be yours. With a bit of forethought and planning, you can keep things under control so that you don’t have to embark upon a weight loss program at the beginning of the year. Here are some tips that will help you to stay on a healthy path.

Keep records – if you’re serious about keeping trim during the holidays then you have to be willing to do the work. Far too many people eat with no abandon, and that results in excessive calories all over the place. By keeping track of what you eat you don’t have to lose any of the joy related to the holiday experience. It can be as simple as keeping a journal where you carefully logged all of the food that you consumed in a single day. This helps to keep you on track and prevent overeating because you know exactly what’s going into your mouth. By having something in front of you that you can look at, you can actually get a sense of whether or not you’re consuming too much.

Don’t go on a Diet Now – some people go on crash diets or try to starve themselves during the holiday season so that they can actually eat more. As you know, these types of starvation tactics or unhealthy eating habits are never a good idea at any time of the year. Just because you’re only going to do it for short little while during the holidays doesn’t make it any better. If you’re planning on skipping meals or using some kind of shortcut to limit your food, it’s going to backfire eventually. Rather than looking for an easy way out, you should try to make smarter choices and balance out your menu planning.

Portion Control – a good simple rule to try to follow during the holiday season is to limit yourself to one helping. Quite often, one helping at a meal is more than enough to get you full and provide you with adequate nutrition. It will also give you ample opportunity to sample all of the yummy treats and foods available to eat. Going back for seconds or thirds is when most people get into trouble, and it’s really not necessary from a nutritional standpoint. If you can keep to the basic rule of one helping per meal, you’ll be doing yourself a huge favor in the long run.

Drinks and Dessert – during the holiday season, there are many foods that contain hidden calories that are simply quite staggering. One of them comes in the form of alcohol or related drinks. This is one area where people indulge way too much, and you’re putting a lot more calories at your system then you may realize. It’s important to drink responsibly at all times and there’s no reason why you have to go completely dry. Yes be aware that this can be one area where you spare yourself excessive caloric intake if you make the right decisions. Dessert is also another thing that you don’t really need in terms of nutrition. If you can promise yourself to stay away from excessive desserts, it will help to keep your weight down for sure.

Make Yourself Accountable – it might help to make an agreement with your partner or spouse to keep an eye out for each other. That means promising not to overeat and making smarter choices instead of reaching for the treats that pack on the pounds. Exercise – it doesn’t take a genius to realize that if you exercise more during the holidays, it will help to keep your weight down. Unfortunately, it seems everybody is looking for a fast weight loss easy answer other than getting more daily activity. But the real answer has been sitting in front of you all this time. If you don’t want to have to compensate for weight gain after the season is over, and try to be as active as possible during all the festivities. You don’t have to take on a professional training regimen, but be as active as you can during the day. This gives you more leeway to enjoy more food in addition to making you feel better in general. There are lots of exercises to choose from and you should be able to find time to be active no matter how busy you are during the holidays.
